Urban Light IV Pole, 2012

On December 11, 2012 at 11:00AM I administered a dose of Tobramycin for IV infusion using one of the lamp poles in Chris Burden's Urban Light as my IV pole. Urban Light is a sculpture of 202 reclaimed lamp poles from around Los Angeles and is a permanent sculpture at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).

This was a scheduled dose of Tobra, as part of the 2 week course of Tobra and Zosyn IV to treat my chronic lung infection. The medicine takes 30 minutes to infuse and had to be given at 11AM. During the course of the treatment I live-tweeted, conversed with passersby, and promoted organ donation.

Chris Burden states his goal for Urban Light was to usurp the function of the street lamps, making them devoid of any function by having them be art. I decided to intervene on Burden's task and repurpose function back into the sculpture by making the light poles an in-use medical IV pole.
